About Future Histories
Future Histories is a cultural heritage organisation and independent archive for African, Asian and Caribbean performing arts in the UK. Established in 2001 to preserve, share and disseminate African and Asian heritage, the organisation has developed tailor-made policies for acquisitions and loans of archives created by both individuals and organisations. Collaborations with mainstream heritage, cultural and academic institutions have been strategically established to promote the inclusion of African and Asian British history and culture in educational institutions, museums and libraries.
Currently housed at Goldsmiths, University of London, Future Histories archives include more than fifty productions. Over the years, Future Histories has used the material to actively engage with community interpretation and public engagement, as well as digitisation of pre-digital resources from Black performance history in Britain. By Black, we refer to the diversity of cultural organisations that have pursued theatre arts with histories that go back to the former British colonies stretching from the Caribbean to South Asia.
Future Histories is funded on a project-by-project basis and mainly supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
