The play is a ten-act Sanskrit drama set in the ancient city of Ujjayini during the reign of the King Pālaka and focuses on the story of a noble but impoverished young Cārudatta, who falls in love with a wealthy courtesan.

Rakshasa’s Ring by Visãkhadatta is based on a classic Indian treatise on statecraft, the Artha-Shastra, which pre-dated Machiavelli’s The Prince by several centuries. The play focuses on the conflict between Kautilya and the Emperor Rakshasa.
